Structured light refers to optical fields with tailored spatial, spectral, or polarization distributions. However, light fields being electromagnetic waves are constrained by Maxwell’s equations. Nonetheless, a wide range of topologically nontrivial structures can be created and exploited. For instance, we have demonstrated the existence of structured Gaussian beams with tailored symmetry structures, highly-focused fields to create textures with their three-dimensional polarization, and short pulses carrying phase and polarization singularities. This has been carried out in collaboration with M. A. Alonso and A. N. Vamivakas from the University of Rochester, USA, and M. R. Dennis from the University of Birmingham, UK.
